Dassault Systèmes is one of Europe’s top software companies and a global leader in real-time 3D (scientific, industrial and interactive 3D media) and Virtual Reality. Part of its Passion for Innovation program, the Virtual Plus Reality Challenge benefits from Dassault Systèmes’ sponsorship of its three main axes, each of which is directly linked to evolving the world of sports through real-time 3D and Virtual Reality technologies:
- Philippe Fuchs’ Paris-Beijing run: real-time 3D geolocalisation and biometrics
- Sports Without Borders: global awareness-building campaign
- The Marseille Laboratory of Movement and Perception: biomechanics foot study
Philippe Fuchs
57-year-old Fuchs is a Virtual Reality professor and researcher at the Ecole des Mines in Paris and author of a four-volume Virtual Reality anthology. A passionate runner of ultramarathons to exotic locations, Fuchs will allow fans across the globe to accompany him on his run from Paris to Beijing, thanks to his partnership with Dassault Systèmes.
Sports Without Borders
Sports Without Borders is a dynamic non-governmental-organization that leverages the power of sports to improve quality of life for young people in developing countries and inner cities, and create ties between different cultures. Sports Without Borders has formed a partnership with Dassault Systèmes to build upon the universal nature of 3D as a communications tool to help build international awareness for its mission.
The Marseille Motion Science Institute
Part of France’s National Center of Scientific Research, the Marseille Laboratory of Movement and Perception will pursue an in-depth three-year 3D Virtual Reality study with Dassault Systèmes based in part on data collected during Fuchs’ Paris-Beijing run.
The French Ministry of Sports and Youth
An official supporter of Dassault Systèmes’ Virtual Plus Reality Challenge, the Sports and Youth Ministry plans to further explore innovations in sports science through real-time 3D and Virtual Reality applications in collaboration with Dassault Systèmes.
Ecole des Mines de Paris
One of France’s most prestigious academic institutions and an internationally renowned engineering school, the Ecole des Mines de Paris educates over 1,000 engineers every year in applied mathematics, computer science and other related areas. As head of the school’s Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality Robotics Center team, Philippe Fuchs uses Dassault Systèmes’ real-time 3D Virtual Reality solutions as core tools in his research.
Intempora
A spin-off from the Ecole des Mines, this software development start-up specializes in real-time and on-board applications for robotics. For the Virtual Plus Reality Challenge, Intempora will use its technologies to recuperate and synchronize in real-time all data recorded during Fuchs’ run (biometrics, movement, GPS, weather, etc.). Intempora will share the data with several research labs within the context of various sports science projects, including the Laboratory of Movement and Perception’s 3D biomechanical simulations of Fuchs’ stride.
ChampionChip
ChampionChip delivers systems for timing of sporting events including synchronized multiple antennas, high-tech analog and digital electronics and dedicated software for live bulk data handling. Dassault Systèmes is using a specialized ChampionChip device to track Fuchs’ run and post his location on its dedicated website.
Polar
A leading brand in its field, Polar Electro Ltd. helps improve health and wellbeing through the understanding of human physiology and the environment. Since launching the world’s first heart rate monitor for sports professionals and athletes in 1982, the company consistently leads in innovation, development, production and marketing of sports instruments and heart rate monitoring equipment. Polar delivers state-of-the-art solutions for active individuals, whether their goal is to improve their general health or compete at a championship level. For the Virtual Plus Reality Challenge, Polar is providing Fuchs with cardiac monitoring watches and a weekly video commentary of his cardiac performance. Dassault Systèmes and Polar share a passion for innovation in sports and are exploring further means of collaboration.
Nokia
Nokia is the world leader in mobility, driving the transformation and growth of the converging Internet and communications industries. Nokia makes a wide range of mobile devices and provides people with experiences in music, navigation, video, television, imaging, games and business mobility through these devices. Nokia also provides equipment, solutions and services for communications networks. To keep Philippe plugged into the virtual world no matter his location, Nokia is supplying him with two Nokia N95 8GB phones, which are able to run text-to-speech software, provide him GPS capabilities and navigation. This will enable Philippe Fuchs to have a mobile office - while running - and seamlessly share data globally, post photos and video on his website, even when in Mongolia.
IEC Telephony
A mobile satellite communications service provider, IEC is donating satellite communications to the Virtual Plus Reality Challenge to keep Philippe linked up throughout his run.
The University of Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne
This French scientific research university will use data collected during Philippe’s run to study the physiological effects incurred by the extended effort.
